General Will of God (con’t.)
His general will also state if you refuse this offer of salvation, you will be condemned to an eternity in hell. He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God (John 3:18). I believe God has many things he asks of us in his general will. He wants our goal in life to become like him. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren (Romans 8:29). That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ (Ephesians 1:12) for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created (Revelation 4:11b). These general commands of God help us to accomplish this goal and can be the reason we are in or out of the will of God. There are many commands.
Holiness is a big command. God’s general command is for us to be holy and if we are not we step out of the will of God.
- Holiness in our speech. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearer (Ephesians 4:29).
- Holiness in our bodies. What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost who is in you, whom ye have of God, and ye are not your own (I Corinthians 6:19, 20)?
- Holiness morally. That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor, not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles who know not God; That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. For God hat not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness (I Thessalonians 4:4-7).
- Holiness in our walk. I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation to which ye are called (Ephesians 4:1).
You cannot be immoral and expect to find the will of God. He will not have it. You would be surprised the people who want to know the will of God but they are in an immoral relationship, have speech that curses God, are into pornography or are being dishonest and untruthful. Wherefore, putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor; for we are members one of another (Ephesians 4:25). They cannot make the connection that the two are directly related. I have seen many people in these situations and they still seek God’s will. They may see temporary success and it may be seen as God’s blessing or God’s will but I will assure you that in the long run it is not.
Love is another command. We are commanded to love one another. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another (I John 4:11). It is the trade mark that people know that we are disciples. We cannot hate and honor the general will of God.
God commands us to forgive. And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God, for Christ’s sake, hath forgiven you (Ephesians 4:32). If we will not forgive, we will not be forgiven. Forget trying to find any facet of God’s will when we will not forgive. To be honest I am tired of hearing “I will forgive but I will not forget.” All you need to look at is the parable when the servant owed a large sum of money and was flat out forgiven but would not forgive someone that owed him a little (Matthew 18:23-35). This is the general will of God for all of us to forgive as we are forgiven.
There are many commands but these are a few that if we do not do, will knock us out of fellowship with God and out of the will of God. I believe God’s desires, commands, disciplines, and judgments are stated in his word for our good and to keep us on track. We can then bask in and enjoy his specific and perfect will for us.
