The Will of God

Part 2

 Sovereign Will of God

Our God is in the heavens; he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased (Psalm 115:3). That about says it.  God does what he wants.  Never try to explain the infinite God with our finite minds.  When my granddaughter was four, she explained it well.  One day Larynn came to her mother and asked, “Mom, is God good?”  My daughter, Rachelle, said, “Yes, God is good.”  My granddaughter then let out a big sign and said, “Whew!”  and ran away to play.  That is all she needed to know.  She was thinking if God is in charge I hope he is a good God because if he is not then I am in big trouble.  If he is a good God then everything would be okay and all his decisions would work out for everyone’s good.  Before she knew it she was believing Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

My recommendation is do not try to interrupt or explain away what he does or why he does it. You can ask and study and learn of his great sovereignty in the Bible but you are going to have to accept that he is sovereign whether you like it or not.  If God says there is election and he has the right to choose, then who are you to tell God how he does that?  If that is what he wants and he is a good God as my granddaughter saw then relax.  He is God.  I am just glad he is choosing and not you or someone else.  I trust him.  He says in his word he is not willing that any should perish.  The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness, but is long suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (II Peter 3:9).  Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15).   This does not conflict with God’s passages of election.  Just do what you are told and let God be sovereign.

I prayed with a boy who asked for forgiveness and that Christ would save him.  His final block was the fear he was not one of the elect.  I told him he needed to repent of his sins, ask forgiveness, and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.  He did!  I am willing to let God be God because I trust him.  Election is not the gospel.  It makes the gospel go.

God works all things after the council of his own will (Ephesians 1:11).  God uses every circumstance to accomplish what he wants.  It is always for our benefit even if we do not see it or appreciate it.  If we decide to step in the way of God’s will and try to alter it or work it to our way, it may appear at times that we can change things because God does not stop us but you have deceived yourself.  His will always will be done.  You may be destroyed but not his council or his will.  God’s sovereign will is right on schedule through all time and eternity and you cannot stop it.  You can enjoy it, rest in it, search it out, and even be a part of it but you will never stop it or change it or thwart it!

I could give you many illustrations in the scriptures like Satan, Cain, Tower of Babel, Herod, and Judas.  There are many illustrations in history like Caesar, Charlemagne, Napoleon, Hitler, and the anti Christ.  They are all gone and soon the anti Christ also, but God’s will keeps chugging along like a train coming down the track.  He even uses every one of them for his will and his glory.  Does that frustrate you or make you want to argue?  Or say Whew!   Like my granddaughter out of the mouths of babes.  God perfects his praise.  Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise (Matthew 21:16).

All I can say about God’s sovereign will is rest in it, trust him, stop worrying and go play!  That is what I want to do.  That brings me much joy and even a desire to be used of God when he performs his will in a way that your decisions bring glory to God.
