The Will of God

Part 11

The Permissive Will of God (con’t.)

When God says no to something we want, like a job, a certain college, a certain potential mate, a larger pastorate, an opportunity in the lime light, or a deal that would bring us a lot of money, it may be for our good and his glory!  Romans 8:28 says the only conductor for everything to work together for good for us is that we “love God”.  Our selfish desires and wants are not listed in that verse.  The worst thing we could ask for as Christians secretly or openly is our will.  It must be his will alone lest he gives us his permissive will and he allows us to stray and get lost in our will.  Do not call it his will when it is really ours.  This is an area we can become blinded to in our lives and end up with God’s permissive will instead of his perfect will.

  1. A brokenness policy.  The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit:  a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise (Psalm 51:17).  Keep a good view of God as in Isaiah 6 and keep your eyes off of men and what they think and expect of you.  A holy view of God through the scriptures will keep our heart in a perfect place to receive his will.
  2. The buddy system.  In the Army they taught us the buddy system.  Spiritually it is the same.  Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful (Proverbs 27:6).  It is a painful truth when we seek our will over God’s will and a close friend sees it when we cannot.  It is necessary to have a buddy like that.  There is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24b).  I take that to mean Jesus Christ, the best friend of all.  I fear we have these phony accountability plans with people but they are not always honest and therefore worthless.  On the other hand, I do not believe in spilling your guts in a group session to people who can and will use it against you.  It must be someone who is worthy of that trust.  For this to work the person you trust must be able to ask you any question and you will answer truthfully.  They may challenge you and you will go to prayer and examine yourself rather than rationalizing and pushing them away.  We need this because we can so easily deceive ourselves.
  3. A bent knee system.  We need a plan for prayer and to seek God on a daily basis and be honest with him.  There are many different ways to do it but just do it.  Worship him, praise, ask him to search you and see if there be any wicked way in you.  Search me, O God, and know my heart:  try me, and know my thoughts:  And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting (Psalm 129:23, 24).  Confess and rejoice over his forgiveness and receive it and move on.  Pray for others and his kingdom work.  Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10).  Whether we pray with someone or alone, we will do more for the kingdom of God on our knees.  It will give us a desire in the end to seek his will over ours.  Seek and stay in his perfect will and stay away from his permissive will.
