The Will of God

The Permissive Will of God

There is one thing inside of us that fights against the will of God.  Our will!  I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.  For I delight in the law of God after the inward man; But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.  Oh, wretched man that I am!  Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?  I thank God through Jesus Christ, or Lord.  So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh, the law of sin.  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world (I John 2:16, Romans 7:21-24).  This is not his will for us.  And the world passeth away, and the lust of it; but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever (I John 2:17).

Remember we can never override the sovereign will of God but if we keep pushing away his will for our lives and desire our will, he may eventually give you what you want.  This is what I call “The Permissive Will of God.”  I do not recommend this to anyone especially believers, the household of faith. Perfect Will of God

There is no sweeter place. Whom, having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory, no safer place (1 Peter 1:8).  He who dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1).  No stronger place.  What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31)?  The only place to be restored to when we have fallen from his will.  Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me, (Psalm 51:10).  No place of greater peace than the perfect will of God.  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

God’s perfect will is when God’s sovereign, God’s general, and God’s specific wills come together in the symphony of perfection for our lives.  The true secret to life is to stay in the center of God’s perfect will as much as we can.  It is a daily process, and sometimes at various crossroads of life’s decisions in a moment we may choose as believers to step out or stay in as Esther decided to stay in.  If I perish, I perish (Esther 4:16). Specific Will of God (con’t)

Another area of God’s specific will is who we choose to be friends with and receive counsel from.  I believe God brings specific people into our lives to help us and sometimes we help them.  Iron sharpeneth iron.  We may enjoy them or they may be there to help us grow and shape us.  Faithful are the wounds of a friend (Proverbs 27:6).  When I want God’s will in my life, God sends specific people into my life for a reason.  The Bible says in I Corinthians 13:33 Be not deceived:  Evil communications corrupts good manners.  Bad friendships, like bad marriages, can pull us out of the will of God.  I always encourage parents to pick their children’s friends for them until they are ready to do so on their own.  If you seek God’s will, he will send the right people into your life. Specific Will of God (con’t.)

Life is made up of three great decisions in life.

  1. Salvation – Where are you going when you die?
  2. Your mate – If you are to be married.
  3. Your calling – What are you going to do for the rest of your life?

All wrapped around by Ephesians 1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ and Romans 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among man brethren. [Read more…]

Specific Will of God (con’t.)

He has a specific plan tailored for each one of us.  It is affected by his perfect will and his permissive will which is affected by our obedience yet can be over ruled by his sovereign will at any time.  Some fight this part because of the apparent stress and anxiety it causes.  We try to erase the dot or God’s tailored plan for us.  I suggest we are looking at this wrong.  We need to approach this in love not fear and fret.  For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end (Jeremiah 29:11).  We need to look at this phase as a treasure hunt. Although there will be times of deep prayer, soul searching, waiting and wrestling, God has it all figured out.  Relax and try to enjoy the great treasure hunt of finding God’s will. [Read more…]

Specific Will of God

The specific will of God may be somewhat more challenging to explain because there are different levels to the specific will of God.  Sometimes it can be present and sometimes future.  It can be short term or a process in the journey.  It may culminate into different stages of a life or turn into a life calling.  Daily I believe Psalms 37:23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and he delighteth in his way.  I do not pray and fret at every intersection when I drive about which way to go but there are times I do when the Spirit prompts.  When that happens, the direction I take leads me to some mission God wanted me to do.  People will ask “How did you know I needed to see you?” or “I cannot believe you stopped or called at just the right time.”  You may say that is coincidental but it happens so often in my ministry I have long since given up on coincidence and accept it as God leading me to do some specific task for that day.  I have a mental or a written schedule every day.  I just let God change it when he wants to.  Actually this has made my life more freeing rather that fretful.  At the end of the day I sometimes have done little or none of what I planned and some days most of what I planned but I have been where God wanted me.  I accomplish this by putting my will in neutral as much as I can.  I release my will when I start my day but when I am engaged in my day’s work it can be more difficult to shift into neutral.  I can tell it is coming when I cannot seem to accomplish what I planned and am running into a brick wall.  I often stop and ask the Lord if he wants me to wait.  I believe God’s will has timing and rhythm to it.  That is the everyday specific will of God.  I plan but I allow him to change it at anytime and when I am walking in the Spirit, great things happen.  Little great things and big great things will happen.  I have led many people to the Lord by being in God’s place for me at the right time. General Will of God (con’t.)

His general will also state if you refuse this offer of salvation, you will be condemned to an eternity in hell.  He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God (John 3:18). I believe God has many things he asks of us in his general will.  He wants our goal in life to become like him.  For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren (Romans 8:29).  That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ (Ephesians 1:12) for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created (Revelation 4:11b).  These general commands of God help us to accomplish this goal and can be the reason we are in or out of the will of God.  There are many commands. General Will of God

I believe that God has a general will that he communicates to us through the scriptures.  They are statements he expresses to us clearly and explicitly in his desires, commands, disciplines, judgments as well as blessings.  First he desires you to be saved.  God is not willing that any should perish.  The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness, but is long-suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (II Peter 3:9).  He is never the reason someone will spend eternity in hell.  We are!  We all died in Adam.  For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive (I Corinthians 15:22).   All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way, and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all (Isaiah 53:6).  God has many attributes.  Not only is he sovereign but he is a God of compassion and love.  I love to share the gospel to lost and dying people and tell them the message God has told me to tell them.  Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house (Acts 16:31).  Just like someone did with me on January 31, 1975.  Sovereign Will of God

Our God is in the heavens; he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased (Psalm 115:3). That about says it.  God does what he wants.  Never try to explain the infinite God with our finite minds.  When my granddaughter was four, she explained it well.  One day Larynn came to her mother and asked, “Mom, is God good?”  My daughter, Rachelle, said, “Yes, God is good.”  My granddaughter then let out a big sign and said, “Whew!”  and ran away to play.  That is all she needed to know.  She was thinking if God is in charge I hope he is a good God because if he is not then I am in big trouble.  If he is a good God then everything would be okay and all his decisions would work out for everyone’s good.  Before she knew it she was believing Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. The Will of God

Part 1
By Pastor Dave

There is often discussion on the subject of God’s will, its struggle, its process and begs the question, can someone really know or find God’s will?  What does it look like when you get his will?  I believe God’s will has many layers.  It is more of a process and may have many stages.  It can be long term and short term and as I learned in my life “the river turns many ways.”  It is a journey with many stops on the way to its final destination.  It may be practical and sometimes appearing mystical, obvious and sometimes elusive but always attainable.  There is no safer place in this world other than the center of God’s will.  There are conditions and commands along the way.  There are parts of God’s will you have no control over and never will.
